Aquaponics training on Oct.17 in Wilburton for an alternative agriculture

Online publication: October 15, 2015

There are various ways to practice agriculture in Oklahoma. And one not-as-well-known way is aquaponics.

Symbiotic Aquaponic will conduct a course from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 17 at Eastern Oklahoma State College, 1301 W Main in Wilburton.

The aquaponics system is a combination of the advantage of hydroponics, soilless plants culture and aquaculture, fish farming. The closed water system permits a very low consumption of water (about 90 percent less). The process is simple; the fish excrete ammonia, then the bacteria transforms it into nitrates, finally absorbed by the plants that, in turn, clean the water for the fish.
